Welded Steel Grating Bar Types

Welded bar gratings can be manufactured through welding using different bar matches, such as the following types: Serrated Type, Flat Bar Type, I type, Twisted Steel Cross Bar Type.

Welded Bar Grating Types:

AGICO supplies welded bar grating mainly in 3 types: serrated bar grating, flat bar grating and twisted cross bar grating. Each type of Welded Bar Grating is a grid-like structural product that possesses properties such as ventilation, lighting, heat dissipation, slip resistance, and explosion protection. When using carbon steel bars, It is typically galvanized to prevent oxidation. Stainless steel grating can be manufactured with no surface treatment. Serrated bars are used to enhance their slip resistance. The flat bars used can also be replaced with I-shaped steel bars.

Welded Bar Grating Manufacturing Process

Welded steel grating is produced using a high-pressure resistance welding machine, here is the welded bar grating manufacturing Steps:

  1. An automated robotic arm places the crossbars horizontally on the evenly arranged flat bars.
  2. With the application of powerful welding power and hydraulic pressure, the crossbars are firmly welded into the flat bars, resulting in high-quality steel grating with robust weld points, stability, and exceptional strength.
  3. After the welding process, the steel grating is cut horizontally along the original plate using a disc cold saw machine, dividing the entire grating into plate segments of the desired dimensions as specified by the customer.
  1. Subsequently, edge welding is carried out. Currently, the majority of domestic companies employ disc cold saw machines as the cutting tool for steel grating, while many foreign enterprises utilize specialized vertical cutting machines.
  2. Following manual edge welding, the surface of the steel grating undergoes treatment. Specific methods of treatment include hot-dip galvanizing, cold galvanizing, painting, or no treatment. Hot-dip galvanizing offers superior rust protection and finds widespread application.

Surface Treatment for Welded Bar Grating Anticorrosion

Hot Dip Galvanizing Advantages: The surface of welded steel grating undergoes a hot-dip galvanizing process. The advantages of hot-dip galvanizing lie in its strong corrosion resistance, good adhesion and hardness of the galvanized layer, and extended service life.

When the hot-dip galvanized layer reaches a thickness of 100μm, the product demonstrates a long lifespan in various environmental conditions. Furthermore, carbon steel products with hot-dip galvanized coating form a protective film on the zinc layer surface within the pH range of 6 to 12.5, providing excellent corrosion resistance. Welded Bar gratings treated with hot-dip galvanizing can have a maintenance-free service life of at least 30 years.

Service Life Analyze of Welded Bar Grating

The service life of hot-dip galvanized welded bar grating primarily depends on the environmental conditions in which it is used and whether the surface zinc layer is damaged. Specifically, factors such as air humidity and acidity play a crucial role. In dry environments, the service life can reach 90 to 100 years, while in mild marine environments, it can range from 50 to 60 years. In industrial settings, the typical service life is around 30 to 40 years. It is important to note that these estimates assume that the surface zinc layer remains undamaged.

Specify Anticorrosion Design Requirement

Customers are required to specify anticorrosion design requirements according to the working environment. Hot-dip galvanized steel grating is suitable for environments with a pH level range from 6 to 12. Beyond this range, the anti-corrosion capability of the zinc layer rapidly declines.
Therefore, when using welded bar grating in practical projects, it is necessary to specify the anticorrosion design requirements of the grating in the project design phase and determine the type of coating. This enables the AGICO to apply a compatible primer coating before delivery, while the topcoat is generally applied on-site after the proper surface preparation according to the specified standards.

When compared to safety grating of other materials, steel grating offers the following advantages under equivalent usage conditions:

  • Simplified design: It features a straightforward design and simple structure, eliminating the need for detailed drawings. Simply specifying the model is sufficient for the manufacturer to design the layout for the customer.
  • Easy installation: It can be easily fixed onto pre-installed supports using saddle clips or welding, requiring only one person for the job. In contrast, patterned steel plates require extensive on-site welding installation, which can result in welding distortion.
  • Time-saving: Steel grating can be installed on-site without the need for secondary processing, allowing for rapid installation.
  • Long-lasting durability: Pre-treated with galvanization, it exhibits strong resistance to impact and heavy pressure. In most cases, it requires minimal maintenance for at least 10 to 15 years, resulting in low maintenance costs.
  • Non-accumulation of debris: Steel grating does not accumulate rain, snow, dust, etc., making it particularly practical in colder regions.
  • Material-saving: With high strength, steel grating is the most material-efficient way to withstand the same load, reducing the material required for supporting structures accordingly.
  • Reduced investment: Steel grating offers significant cost savings in terms of material, labor, and project duration. Furthermore, it requires minimal cleaning and maintenance during usage.
  • Reduced wind resistance: It’s excellent ventilation and low wind resistance help mitigate wind damage. This feature is particularly useful in Western China.
  • Modern aesthetics: With its open and transparent design, steel grating provides a sense of modernity with its clean lines and overall sleek appearance.

How to Choose Welded Bar Grating Product

  • When selecting the type of welded steel grating, such as in chemical plants, typical live loads are 2 kN/m² and maintenance loads are 2 kN/m², with secondary beam spacing ranging from 1000 to 1200 mm.
  • For applications such as stair treads and steel operating platforms, flat steel welded grating models such as G253/30/100, G255/30/100, G323/30/100, and G325/30/100 are commonly used.
  • For trench covers, walkways with wider width requirements, and gangways, flat steel welded grating models like G405/30/100, G405/30/50, G505/30/100, and G605/30/100 are generally employed. Alternatively, Type 1 or serrated flat steel grating can be used. In some critical areas, other metal materials such as stainless steel and aluminum alloy grating products may be selected.
